Albrecht Durer and Leonardo da Vinci were possibly the most famous exponents, and produced astonishingly sensitive drawings on specially prepared wood or paper. Although other metals such as copper can be used, silver wire with its eventual softening to a russet line became a firm favourite .As part of a re-enactment project I researched extensively and found recipes for the preparations involving rabbit skins and ground calcified limestone. Happily, diluted white acrylic paint is an excellent substitute! The roughness of the coating allows a thin line of silver to be deposited on the paper. The boxwood holder is based on an ivory holder from the mediaeval section of the British Museum. You get a holder and spare wire and two pieces of treated watercolour paper.
